Is the filing fee the whole cost?

The filing fee is rarely what makes dissolution expensive. The real costs are the ones that keep running while you wait: annual report fees, franchise taxes (California charges $800 a year even for inactive LLCs), and registered-agent bills. Many states also want the LLC in good standing, with annual reports and franchise taxes paid, before they accept the filing, and a few want a tax clearance certificate first; each state guide says which. For the states where we have read the yearly charge at the agency, see what an unused LLC costs to keep open each year. If your LLC is done, dissolving sooner is almost always cheaper than waiting: run the numbers with the free cost-of-waiting calculator, then follow your state's exact steps from the state-by-state guide or the dissolution wizard.
